Delta Flows: The Work for the Future Continues Despite the Struggles

By: Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla

While we continue our work around the Bay-Delta Plan, the Delta tunnel, and our US EPA Petition, the positive projects for the future of the region are also moving forward.

We are very happy to announce the publication of the Rice Farming Handbook for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. This book not only examines the environmental benefits of rice farming (carbon sequestration, subsidence reversal, and waterfowl habitat), it also provides practical and financial resource listings to support this form of sustainable farming.

It is beautifully illustrated, a testimonial to how water, farming, and habitat can thrive together in the Dela in an integrated way.

Additionally, we have included a second stunning rice farming video featuring Gino Celli – who is receiving our Delta Catalyst Award at our 4/12/24 Where the Future Flows Benefit. Gino is now farming 1000 acres of rice in the Delta and has begun farming organic rice with good results. Click here to join the festivities and to support our work.

We would like to thank the following parties for their intellectual and/or financial support that made this handbook stronger: Thomas Zuckerman, Trevor Carlson (Wetland Preservation Foundation), Michelle Leinfelder-Miles, Ph.D. (UC Cooperative Extension, San Joaquin County), Dennis Pelucca (Pest Control Advisor), Steven Deverel, Ph.D. (Hydro Focus), Brian Barrett (ADM), Gino Celli (Celli Ranches), Jerred Dixon (Conservation Farms & Ranches), Metropolitan Water District, and Edge Collaborative.

We share this good news so that we can all stay focused on creating a pro Delta future, while persevering to stop the bad. The Delta is our region, our home, our environment, and our collective work from rural and urban residents is essential to shaping our sustainable future.
