Delta Flows: Rice Farming in the Delta with Jerred Dixon & Delta Ag Updates

By: Sara Medina

NEW Rice Farming in the Delta Video!

The third video of Restore the Delta’s Rice Farming in the Delta series is here! Jerred Dixon, fifth-generation Delta farmer, and Staten Island Director, discusses the importance of rice farming, specifically in the Delta, and offers new perspectives on how it can help different aspects of Delta farming, including mitigating subsidence and making a profit. In addition, he expands on changes in crop trends and the daily struggles of farms. Altogether, Dixon encouraged those interested in rice farming to jump on as soon as possible, with the current conditions the Delta is facing.

Are you a Delta farmer who is interested in converting to rice? Let us know!

We have compiled a Rice Farming handbook for Delta farmers who are interested in learning more about the dynamic benefits of rice farming, from improving subsidence to carbon credits. We want to highlight upcoming programs like The Nature Conservancy’s Rice Conversion Grant. For more information, please contact Sara Medina, Restore the Delta’s Sustainable Agriculture and Land Manager.

Another program available comes from Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (ADM), which helps farmers convert to rice with an upfront payment. The Planting Advancement Program is great for farmers who need additional financial support to transition to rice farming. If interested please contact Brian Barrett, ADM Delta Fieldman at (530) 635-0259.

Drone Technology in Agriculture Survey for Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Farmers – We want to hear from you!

Restore the Delta is developing a drone program for Delta farmers! Many farmers have expressed concern that the next generation of farmers and workers won’t be returning and that the labor rate is dropping every year. To help with that effort, we want to bring a new career opportunity in Delta agriculture to the next generation of agriculture workers, as well as another tool for farmers to assist them in their day-to-day work! In order to truly understand how farmers view drone technology and how they envision using it in their own businesses, we are conducting a survey. For Delta farmers, please fill out the survey and let us know what you think!
