Action alert: Good news and bad news

Action alert: The bad news — California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is holding a meeting on the installation of temporary emergency drought barriers across three channels in the Delta. We encourage you to attend!

DWR Drought Barrier Meeting
Date: February 12, 2015 – 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Location: Clarksburg Community Church, 52910 Netherlands Ave., Clarksburg, CA 95612

Last month, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) submitted an application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeking a programmatic permit to allow the installation of temporary, emergency drought barriers across three channels in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta.  The temporary rock barriers would be installed only in the event of drought conditions so severe that physical salinity control structures are needed to conserve water in upstream reservoirs for health and safety and critical environmental purposes.

DWR staff will discuss the permit application as well as the Department's analysis of the environmental effects of emergency drought barriers and proposed actions to mitigate any adverse effects at an informational meeting.  An overview of the proposal will be presented, followed by a question-and-answer period.

DWR's environmental analysis and proposed mitigation measures are described here.  A 30-day public comment period on the document began January 23.  Comments must be submitted by 5 p.m. on February 25, 2015.   Please visit DWR's website page for background information.
