Congressional Democrats from California are pushing back against a Trump administration plan
to pump more water out of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, warning it could decimate
already struggling fish populations and disrupt water supplies for millions of residents.
As The Los Angeles Times reports, seven lawmakers led by Rep. John Garamendi said the
plan prioritizes politics over science and risks long-term damage to the Delta’s fragile
ecosystem. The proposal would allow more water to be exported south to large agricultural
water agencies.
In a letter to the Bureau of Reclamation’s acting commissioner, the lawmakers wrote that “the
long-term sustainability of the Delta’s fresh water supply and ecosystem depends on careful,
scientifically backed coordination.”
Environmental and fishing groups, along with Governor Newsom and state lawmakers, are
strongly opposing the plan.
