After failing to secure adequate funding for the twin tunnels (CA WaterFix) from Westlands Water District, Santa Clara Valley Water District, and Kern County Water Agency last fall, the leading proponent of the CA WaterFix, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), is preparing their board for a vote on Tuesday to approve funding for the phased-in version of the massive conveyance project.
Despite disconcerting findings from a federal audit, a state audit, and a recent PRA request on MWD completed by Restore the Delta, this wounded boondoogle is limping towards approval.
That’s why we need YOU to join us at MWD headquarters—next to Union Station—this Tuesday, April 10 at 11AM for a rally and press conference to protest MWD’s intention to approve funding for the phased tunnels, and at 12PM to deliver a comment to the MWD board.
Activists planning to attend the press conference and rally are encouraged to make signs, but bringing your voice is what really matters. Those planning to also attend the board vote should prepare to address the board with a two- to three-minute comment that conveys your thoughts on why the Delta tunnels will harm Southern California ratepayers, Delta water quality, and the public interest of the entire state.
Though we might be a little biased, we think Restore the Delta’s executive director, Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla perfectly sums up why this project will hurt all Californians in a recent E&E News story,
“After eleven years, and over a quarter of a billion dollars, the project description, operational details, and cost analysis are still sorely lacking,” she said in a statement. “This isn’t simply about the people of the delta being opposed to the plan. It’s about the state, and its sponsor [Metropolitan], failing to make an honest and accurate case for any tunnels that shows real benefits for Californians.”
